If you opt to use a firearm for self-defense, there are certain things you need to know. The first rule is that if you point a gun at someone, you better be willing to pull the trigger. If you are not, the chances are very good that the gun can be taken away from you and used against you.
The second thing to know is that if you would prefer not to have to pull the trigger -- even if you are willing -- you have to make your potential attacker believe that you will pull that trigger without the slightest hesitation if he moves. To do this, extend your arm outward, point it at him, and remain steady.

If you plan to carry a gun, you most likely must have a permit to carry it. You may or may not be allowed to conceal the gun, depending on what state you live in. Whether it is required or not, you should definitely take a gun safety course. You should also visit your local shooting range and do some target practice.
Getting used to a gun and getting used to shooting at targets is one thing. Adjusting to pointing it at another human being and pulling the trigger is something altogether different. If you are not prepared for that, don't buy a gun. It is useless to you. You would be better off investing in some pepper spray and self-defense classes.
